I had a healthy pregnancy I just had terrible morning sickness. I was full term so they decided to induce me at 40 weeks and 4 days. Everything was perfect leading up to my delivery. I went into the hospital the evening of 9/20. I was given a drug called cervadil to help soften my cervix and get me ready for delivery. The plan was to get the cervadil then the potassium the following morning. Minutes after it was administered Noah’s heart rate dropped and the nurses ran in with scrubs and prepped us for an emergency c-section.

He was taken out of about 20minutes later and he wasn’t breathing. They tried for a long time to suction and get him stable to life flight him. He was life flighted to children’s and immediately put on a cooling treatment. Noah went several minutes without oxygens so he suffered a severe brain injury. During his hypoxic episode he didn’t receive enough blood flow to his kidneys. This put him into kidney failure. The purpose of the cooling treatment is to freeze any brain cells that are on the verge of dying and when the body warms back up it gives those cells the opportunity to regenerate. His birth diagnosis was severe HIE hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, and renal failure. During his stay in the nicu he had over 10 surgeries, cardiac arrest, 5 blood infections, meningitis , multiple blood transfusions, 100 treatment of dialysis and aspiration pneumonia. He currently is at home waiting to get to 20lbs so he is big enough to receive a kidney transplant. As far as the brain injury we don’t know the extent of it. He is turning one next week. The doctors told me he would be a vegetable, he would need assistance is entire life for breathing and to “pull the plug”. He is sooo happy and full of life. He doesn’t require any oxygen and the only crappy part of is day is the 12 hours of peritoneal dialysis every day. He is a true fighter and a little miracle!!!!

You may be wondering what makes our relationship so unique... Cole has Asperger's, and I (McKenna) have Cerebral Palsy. The challenges of life, coupled with our disabilities can make for a pretty interesting day-to-day life. In fact our life sometimes seems like anything but day-to-day. I suppose the same can be said for our relationship from the beginning. We started dating just over 2 years ago and decided that we wanted to have a courtship than your typical dating relationship. The purpose of showing people our lives, is to show people that disability doesn't need to stop you from reaching your goals. You can still go to college, live independently, get married, and even have a family regardless of the cards you are dealt. We may not be your typical couple. we may not live "normal lives" but that doesn't stop us from living the best life we can!
